The lightbulb moment came when Kirsty’s boyfriend asked her to marry him. She had been struggling with her weight for several years, but this was the tipping point that pushed her to make the changes she’d always wanted to make.
“I was finding it harder and harder to move,” said Kirsty.
“Even though I had the motivation, I couldn’t always physically do it. So, after years of being obese, my now fiancé asked me to marry him and I decided that I did not want to be that size at the wedding.”I wanted to be healthy and obviously eventually have kids, so I wanted to be in the healthiest place
possible. So that’s what triggered the weight loss.”
Kirsty was 29, and having reached a peak weight of 167kg, started her incredible weight loss journey. She joined Geelong’s Gym, began training with Nathan, one of the gym’s Personal Trainers, and the results have been staggering. In two years Kirsty has lost an incredible 74kg, and she is still working hard to lose even more.
But Kirsty’s history isn’t dissimilar to many people who find themselves overweight. She soon withdrew from her social life, staying away from “basic low key social events”, and even avoided going out in public if she could.
“I hadn’t always been super big, but I’d always been that little bit overweight,” said Kirsty. “I guess finishing Uni and starting an office job meant that I was sitting down a lot more than I had been used to. Coupled with that, I was getting a lot of chronic pain that had left me bed-ridden for
weeks at a time throughout the year. So, in about four years I’d really put on a lot of weight, and wasn’t happy with how I was feeling or how I was looking.”
With the help of her friends who were already members of Geelong’s Gym, Kirsty became a member and started putting in the hard work on the gym floor. Not wanting to let her friends down, if she made plans to meet them there, she would always turn up without fail.
This internal need to honour appointments led her to Nathan, and a client/personal trainer partnership was formed that would achieve extraordinary results.
But seeing a personal trainer didn’t feel natural in the beginning, due to preconceived ideas of how the relationship might work.
“Nathan’s a really good motivator, he’s a really positive person, and I think when I started personal training I was worried it was going to be a person yelling in your face, really pushing you in a negative way,” said Kirsty. “Nathan definitely pushes me and I walk out of here sweaty every week, but he’s a really positive person and really makes me want to improve myself.”
Kirsty has been training with Nathan for two years now, and the work she has put into her fitness at the gym, coupled with dietary changes and medical intervention, has resulted in her turning her life completely around.
Her tale is extraordinary, but not impossible, and she has a very simple message for anyone else in a similar situation.
“Figure out what motivates you and what keeps you on track,” she said. “For me it was making appointments and sticking to them, and making sure I had the support around me of friends, family and my trainer. Geelong’s Gym has been really helpful for that.”

iron in front of the mirrors. So, it’s definitely been a really positive and friendly atmosphere here.”
Stacey takes up a second challenge!
After completing the Geelong’s Gym 10 Week Super Challenge where she’d been motivated to attend and ultimately shaved two and a half years of her BioAge, Stacey found herself slackening off. She needed something else to renew her enthusiasm.
For many years Gabbi had only dreamed of wearing size 14. At 115 kilos and a size 20-22, achieving that dream seemed far too hard to reach. So when she finally made the decision to improve her health and happiness by changing her diet and joining Geelong’s Gym in 2011, the 27-year-old accountant never imagined she would eventually fit into size 12 jeans. Thanks to a clean diet, regular personal training sessions and daily exercise at Geelong’s Gym, Gabbi lost a whopping 45 kilos!
“ I can’t believe it. It’s so surreal,” Gabbi said, “I’m a much better person now; I’m fitter and I have a lot more confidence.” Gabby now proudly weighs 70kg thanks to a clean diet, PT sessions with Emily Hayward, daily exercise at Geelong’s Gym and the staff members who have supported and encourage her along the way. “I never liked going to gyms, but since joining Geelong’s Gym I can’t stay away, it helps with my stress levels. It has such a relaxed, great environment.”
Like many people who have struggled with weight loss, Gabbi had attempted dieting many times before but never with results. The difference this time was her mindset and joining the gym. “This was something I had to do for myself and no one else. I was sick of how I was feeling.” Gabbi now intends to continue training hard in the gym and run further than 5km without stopping.
