Your Fittest Week Ever…

Yes indeedy, next week has the potential to be your fittest week EVER!  Why, I hear you ask, is next week more special than any other week?  I’m glad you asked.

Have you ever noticed when there’s a large sporting event happening in the world – like the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games or the Soccer World Cup – that there’s a surge in physical acitivity, both indoors and outdoors?

Choose cycling to get around town - it's fun, quick and you'll feel much fitter!

Choose cycling to get around town - it's fun, quick and you'll feel much fitter!

We certainly notice it at Geelong’s Gym.  Suddenly everyone gets inspired and people pour through our doors to take part in classes, workout in the gym and just generally get more active.  Maybe it’s because people start to recognise where a little physical activity and fitness can take them.

So, we are thrilled that Geelong is hosting the 2010 UCI Road World Championships next week. This event is the largest cycling competition Australia has ever hosted and it’s right here on our doorstep – literally! Many lucky residents will actually be able to look out their front windows and see world class cyclists racing by!

Some local residents may be wondering how they’re going to get around with so many road closures. And our suggestion is, make this upcoming week your fittest week ever, dust off your bike and join in the activity. You’ll be surprised at how fit you feel after a week of cycling to the gym, to work, even to get your groceries!

But whatever you do, make sure you enjoy being part of such an exciting event in Geelong.

When would NOW be a good time?!

We quite often think and talk about things but do we, or you, actually follow through and do those things?  Like NOW.

Why not challenge yourself today?

A friend of mine once told me that if you can do something different than what you would normally do, something in your life that will cause you to stretch and cause you to grow, something to increase your current circle of influence, then it will cause you to have a lot of things change and grow in your life.  And that’s what a group of us did this past weekend.

The Banter Boys

The Banter Boys

I suggested to some friends of mine, Rob Claridge from Claridge Naturopathics, Craig Goddard from Subway/Muzz Buzz and Ross Hultgren from Chapman Welsh Financial Services that we go for a weekend cycling, where we take off and head to a set destination (in this case we went to the Yarra Valley) and go cycling for three days.  It gave us a fantastic opportunity to talk about business (including our personal business crusades), our personal lives, and the decisions we made that brought us to where we are today and formed our journeys, and what a magnificent weekend it was.  Three days felt like two weeks holiday.  We’re fitter and stronger, our legs, admittedly, a bit more sore.  And we’ve learned so much from each others stories and life journeys.  There’s just so much we all benefited from.

So why not step out from your usual routine and do something you’ve been thinking about for a while but haven’t actually done?

Splendiferous Spinning Benefits

Did you know that indoor cycling on a stationary bike travelling on imaginary terrain set to music is one of the most efficient ways to burn kilojoules, tone the body and develop great fitness?

The cycling craze which swept the world was originally developed as “spinning” by ultra-endurance cyclist Johnny Goldberg (aka Johnny G) in 1986.

Johnny G’s original goal was simple: to help people challenge themselves to be their physical and mental best.  He succeeded; the classes are tough on the body and mind.

But don’t be scared… You don’t have to be super fit to do Spin!

Why not?

Because Spin requires next to no coordination – do I hear a cheer from all of you out there who can’t even manage to walk down the street without tripping on your shoes?

And, the Spin bikes allow you to set your own resistance levels so you can work as easy or as hard as you choose.

So if you’re a beginner, you will be just as at home in a Spin class as an experienced athlete.  How’s that for comforting?

Want to hear some other great benefits about Spin?  Try these on for size:

  • Spin is non-impact, so you can train hard without worrying about injuring yourself.
  • If you currently have an injury (damn that footy game where you pushed yourself a little too hard!!), Spin has proven benefits for knee and other leg injuries – so you can keep fit while recuperating from your injury.
  • Watch your fat just melt away – Spin gets your heart rate soaring and your metabolism climbs with.  But it gets even better… when your heart rate slows after the class, your metabolism still stays up for hours so you continue to burn fat while sitting in front of the TV!!
  • Say goodbye to flabby thighs and hello to fantastic looking, taut and toned legs.  That’s right, Spin combines a resistance workout with cardiovascular training, so you can’t help but get toned!

If you take just 45 minutes out of your day and try a Spin class, you can experience the benefits for yourself.

So what are you waiting for? Get to a Spin class and start riding to music now.
