A recent study in the Journal of Experimental Biology that over the past 100 years, elite swimmers have grown an average 11.5 cm, more than double the growth of the normal population whereas elite sprinters have shot up 16 cm! Obviously I’ve reversed the cause and effect for dramatic impact… but it’s interesting to note that the 2008 Olympic 100 m Gold Medallist, Usain Bolt at 196 centimetres is a full 18 cm taler than Jesse Owens who competed in the 1936 Olympics and 7.5 cm taller than Carl Lewis who broke the world record in 1987.
The same is true for weights – elite athletes are heavier than ever – muscle development enhanced by rigorous training and other nutritional enhancers.
So where does that leave you? If you thought competition was getting tougher out there – you’re right. You need to get as strong and fit as you can – the trend is toward taller and stronger…
But don’t forget that ENERGY and PASSION can still win you the Gold – that was proven by Gail Devers who won Gold Medals in sprinting in 1992 and 1996…
So there is hope – for those who are committed to developing to their ultimate best!
This is just a fun way to look at performing at your best – change your perspective and have some fun with it!
